The ask
The CRDC publishes data on equity in U.S. public schools, from discipline to course access. The old site was hard going for anyone who wasn’t already a data researcher, and nobody had a clear picture of who the audience was.
What we built
Research first: interviews with data researchers, current users, and educators, plus an audit of the legacy site.
A UI system with accessible controls, type, and color, tuned for long tables and charts.
Infographics that turn multi-dimensional data into something a non-expert can read, with the raw data one click away for researchers.
Messaging that frames the data around what it can change, not just what it counts.
The hard part
Two audiences who want opposite things. Researchers want every column; everyone else wants the answer. We designed summary views and visualizations for the second group without hiding anything from the first.
